Annual
trips are scheduled in the summer to local and regional areas
in need of disaster assistance.
The inaugural trip was taken in 2008 to Greensburg, Kansas, where one of the largest and strongest tornadoes in recorded history had hit the town on the night of May 4, 2007, destroying or damaging beyond repair 95 percent of the buildings in the town. Ten hearty volunteers went and spent a week helping to rebuild homes in Greensburg and helping the residents in their recovery.
The 2009 Adult Mission trip involved rebuilding flood-ravaged homes in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Five volunteers worked for a full week joined by five more volunteers for a long weekend. For a family whose home was flood ravaged, volunteers put in a wood floor, painted, and delivered damaged aluminum scraps to a recycling center. The resulting $150 check was given to the delighted homeowner!
