School Support
As a part of our mission commitment to children at-risk, we support teachers who work with these children throughout the school year. Mission volunteers host a “Teacher Appreciation Day” each spring for about 30 teachers at the Independent Learning Program (formerly Yates School) and for about 40 teachers at Walnut Hill School.
Volunteers serve a luncheon and enjoy sharing conversation with these special teachers. Their commitment is honored and each is recognized with a gift card. The teachers are always very appreciative of this recognition. In 2008 the Omaha Public School District recognized Presbyterian Church of the Cross as an “A+ Advocate”, the first congregation to ever receive such a distinction.
The Mission Committee also pays for the supplies needed to make personal graduation gifts consisting of a 8'X10" picture frame matted in the school color, graduation appliques, and a gift card for each graduate. A teacher committee puts them together. The graduate's parents treasure this gift. In addition, each graduate is presented with a gift card.
Hygiene and toiletry supplies are purchased with the committee's contribution to assist students-at-risk. The schools often run out of these supplies so this gift helps greatly.
About 300 scarves are knitted each year to give to students as they arrive on cold mornings. What a beautiful sight it is when they cuddle their new scarves and say "Thank You"!
A coat drive is conducted each year with Mission Committee money to ensure each student has a warm coat to wear during the winter months. Lacking coats brothers/sisters will sometimes be forced to attend school on alternate days as they share one coat. This drive ensures each has a coat to wear. They are much appreciated!
